Passage: Matthew 27:32-44
Envy is an emotion which "occurs when a person lacks another's superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it". Envy sometimes leads us to despise the subject of our envy. We see this as Jesus is being mocked on the cross. Even though they had won and Jesus was being crucified in front of their eyes the chief priests and the people still insulted Jesus. They are driving a wedge between themselves and the one who came to save them.
