Passage: Matthew 6:19-34
The 7th Commandment can sound very much like it’s just a moral/ethical issue…stealing is bad, don’t do it. But, like all the Commandments, it’s really a heart issue. Stealing comes from a heart that doesn’t trust that God’s promise to provide for His people is true. To get at the root of this commandment we have to see God for who He is: a Father who lovingly provides all that we need. When we understand God’s generosity to us then not only do we not want to take from others, but we want to extend that same generosity to them. It’s not enough just to not steal; we’re compelled to do the opposite of stealing. We’re called to give, to make sure that others have what they need. In fact, maybe God’s providence for someone else comes through us.
