The Pharisees knew their history and Old Testament.  So they would have immediately understood  the comparison  Jesus is making  in John 10:9, “Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved.” and Psalm 118:20, “These gates lead to the presence of the Lord, and the godly enter there.”  Only through the Grace of Jesus will we enter into His Kingdom, there is no other gate.
