Passage: Genesis 15:1-6

The phrase “written in the stars “implies that there are powers or fates out there that control our destiny, that direct how things will be. Impersonal, cold, and distant, these powers supposedly cause things to align, movements to happen, and history to unfold. But 3500 years ago God took Abram outside on a starlit night and made a promise to him that would change everything. The promise of land, offspring, and that he would be a blessing to the nations. In Jesus, that promise came true. Not impersonal fates controlling destiny but a very personal savior—God incarnate—who would change the course of the history of the world. And who would make an impossible future attainable.

God makes a very personal covenant with Abram, one that He alone could keep: that through Abram’s descendants the nations will be blessed. Throughout all of Israel’s history, God remembers his covenant, finally fulfilling it in Jesus. (Finally—in terms of time, and in terms of Jesus being the final fulfillment.)
